Cybersecurity employment follows both the technology economy and the institutions that have the most to protect. California and Texas are large markets because of their scale, while Virginia and Maryland benefit from federal agencies, defense contractors and the dense technology economy around Washington. New York adds financial-services demand, and Florida has grown as its population and business base expand.

CyberSeek job-posting data complement BLS occupation statistics because demand changes faster than official employment counts. Together they show where security teams are already large and where employers are still struggling to hire.

The Washington corridor is unusually specialised

Northern Virginia and Maryland have a concentration of cleared cyber roles, government contractors and federal technology work that does not exist at the same scale elsewhere. Many jobs require security clearances or specialised experience, limiting the available labour pool.

That can keep vacancies open even when the broader technology job market softens.

Finance creates another security cluster

New York and New Jersey support large security teams because banks, insurers and market infrastructure companies face demanding regulatory and operational requirements. The work spans identity, cloud security, fraud, incident response and governance.

Financial cyber employment is less visible than consumer technology but often more stable because security spending is difficult to cut aggressively.

State totals hide remote work

Security teams are increasingly distributed, so a job assigned to a company's headquarters state may be performed elsewhere. Remote work makes state counts less precise than they were a decade ago.

Even so, the strongest clusters still matter for training, government contracting and access to experienced security leaders.
