Why Texas matters to US business

Texas is often introduced as an energy economy, which is true but incomplete. Oil, gas, refining and petrochemicals remain foundational, yet the state now also carries one of the country's largest corporate headquarters bases, a fast-growing semiconductor manufacturing footprint, major technology clusters and a logistics system built around Gulf ports, interstate freight and trade with Mexico.

The more useful way to understand Texas is as several large business economies operating inside one state. Houston is tied to energy, industrial services, healthcare and global trade. Dallas-Fort Worth has become a major headquarters, finance, telecom, logistics and defence market. Austin concentrates software, venture capital and semiconductor investment. San Antonio adds cybersecurity, healthcare, military activity and financial services. Statewide averages flatten those differences.

Scale also changes the operating environment. Texas added roughly 2.6 million residents between the 2020 estimates base and July 2025, according to the Census Bureau. That population growth supports housing, construction, retail and services, while also increasing pressure on roads, power infrastructure and water systems. For companies, rapid growth creates customers and workers, but it also raises the value of infrastructure planning.

Energy and petrochemicals

Houston remains the centre of the US oil and gas industry and one of the world's most important energy business clusters. The state's energy economy extends beyond upstream production into refining, chemicals, LNG, pipelines, trading, engineering and a growing set of grid, renewable and low-carbon projects.

Semiconductors

Texas has one of the country's deepest semiconductor manufacturing histories and is attracting a new investment cycle. Texas Instruments, Samsung and a wide supplier base give the state exposure to fabrication, analogue chips, advanced manufacturing and the equipment and materials that support new fabs.

Technology and software

Austin is the best-known technology cluster, but the sector is broader than one city. Enterprise technology, cloud infrastructure, telecom, cybersecurity and corporate engineering teams are spread across Austin and Dallas-Fort Worth, with major employers also operating elsewhere in the state.

Aerospace and defence

North Texas has a substantial aerospace and defence base, including aircraft, military systems and engineering operations. San Antonio's military presence and Houston's space economy add different forms of federal and aerospace demand.

Manufacturing

Vehicles, electronics, machinery, chemicals and industrial equipment make Texas one of the country's largest manufacturing states. For employers, the state-level labour story is therefore less about whether Texas has workers and more about whether the required skills are available in the right metro at the right cost.

Trade and exports

Texas is the leading US state for goods exports. Energy, chemicals, electronics, machinery and transportation equipment all contribute to that position, while trade with Mexico is especially important to manufacturing supply chains.

The state is both a producer and a gateway. Goods moving through Gulf ports and border crossings make trade infrastructure economically important even for companies that are not themselves exporters. Tariffs, energy prices and cross-border supply-chain changes can therefore have an unusually direct effect on the Texas business cycle.

Texas is still an energy superpower, but describing it mainly through oil and gas now misses the more interesting change. Population growth, semiconductor investment, corporate relocations and advanced manufacturing are creating a broader economic base. The opportunity is scale; the risk is whether transport, power and other infrastructure can expand quickly enough to support it.
