Where US Manufacturing Jobs Are Concentrated in 2026

Manufacturing employment in the United States is spread across several large state clusters rather than one industrial belt. California remains the biggest manufacturing labour market by headcount, with roughly 1.2 million payroll jobs in the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics state table.

Texas is close to one million manufacturing jobs, while Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and North Carolina form another large group of factory-heavy states. The mix ranges from vehicles and machinery to food, chemicals, aerospace and electronics.

California and Texas lead for different reasons

California combines aerospace, electronics, food processing, medical technology and other advanced manufacturing. Texas has a different profile built around energy equipment, chemicals, aerospace, electronics and a rapidly expanding semiconductor base.

The two states demonstrate why manufacturing should not be treated as one industry. A state can have a large factory workforce without sharing the same customers, skills or business cycle as another manufacturing hub.

The Midwest remains essential

Ohio and Michigan retain deep automotive, machinery and materials supply chains. Indiana has one of the country's highest manufacturing employment shares relative to its population, while Wisconsin and Illinois add machinery, food, chemicals and industrial equipment.

These clusters matter because supplier networks are difficult to recreate quickly. New factories often choose regions where tooling, maintenance, logistics and experienced production workers already exist.

Headcount is only one measure of industrial strength

Employment does not capture output per worker, capital intensity or the value of goods produced. Semiconductor fabrication and refining can generate enormous output with fewer workers than labour-intensive manufacturing.

For site selection, companies should combine payroll counts with wages, electricity availability, logistics, supplier depth and the specific occupations required by the plant.
