Bank deposits do not follow population as neatly as retail spending. New York and California lead because they combine large populations with major financial centres, but Utah and South Dakota rank far higher than their population would suggest. The reason is that some banks book national deposits through institutions headquartered in those states.

FDIC Summary of Deposits data therefore need to be read carefully. A dollar assigned to a state is not always money deposited by a household or business physically located there.

New York remains the financial centre

New York's deposit base reflects both a huge local economy and the concentration of commercial banking, securities firms and corporate treasury activity around New York City. California follows with a large consumer and business deposit market spread across several metropolitan areas.

Texas combines a fast-growing population with a large corporate economy. Florida has also climbed as population and wealth have moved south.

Utah and South Dakota are structural outliers

Utah and South Dakota host banking entities whose national businesses make state deposit totals look unusually large. Credit-card and digital banking structures can assign deposits to the chartering bank rather than the customer's home state.

That makes them important financial jurisdictions, but not directly comparable with California or Florida as local deposit markets.

Deposits matter because they fund lending

A stable deposit franchise gives banks cheaper and more dependable funding than wholesale markets. State deposit trends can therefore affect local lending competition and branch strategy.

For investors, the better comparison is often bank-level rather than state-level. For regional economic analysis, however, deposit geography still helps explain where financial institutions are concentrated.
