Artificial intelligence may be delivered through the cloud, but the people building it remain highly concentrated. Brookings research found the San Francisco Bay Area alone accounted for about 13% of US AI-related job postings, an extraordinary share for one region in a country-sized labour market.
Stanford's 2026 AI Index tells the same story at state level. California represented 17.18% of US AI job postings in 2025, followed by Texas at 8.10%, New York at 6.64% and Washington at 3.93%. The city picture is more concentrated still because much of that activity sits inside a handful of metropolitan areas.
San Francisco and San Jose form one connected AI labour market
San Francisco and San Jose are separate metropolitan areas in official statistics, but AI workers move through one wider Bay Area ecosystem. Frontier-model companies, cloud platforms, semiconductor businesses, startups and venture firms are clustered within commuting distance of one another.
That creates advantages that are difficult to reproduce quickly. A researcher can move from a large technology company to a startup without relocating, founders can recruit experienced infrastructure engineers, and investors can meet several companies in a day. The cost is high housing expense and intense competition for specialised talent.
Seattle, New York and Boston have durable advantages
Seattle's AI market is built on cloud computing. Microsoft and Amazon provide a deep base of engineers, while research groups and startups draw from the same workforce. New York is broader, combining AI with finance, advertising, media, enterprise software and a large corporate customer base.
Boston and Cambridge remain unusually strong in research-intensive AI. MIT, Harvard and the surrounding biotechnology and robotics sectors create demand for machine learning that is often closer to science and engineering than consumer software.
Washington, Austin and Los Angeles bring different specialities
Washington, DC and Northern Virginia combine government, defence, cybersecurity and cloud infrastructure. Austin has become a major Texas technology centre with large-company engineering teams and a substantial startup market. Los Angeles combines AI with entertainment, aerospace, ecommerce and autonomous systems.
San Diego rounds out the group because wireless technology, biotechnology and defence create a specialised demand for machine learning. It is smaller than the Bay Area or New York, but concentration matters more than raw population when assessing the depth of an AI labour market.
The best city depends on the kind of AI work
A ranking of AI jobs can hide major differences in the work itself. San Francisco is strongest for frontier models and startups. Seattle is exceptional for cloud infrastructure. Boston is strong in research and life sciences. Washington is unusually important for defence and federal technology.
Job seekers should therefore treat total posting volume as the first filter rather than the final answer. The deeper question is whether a city has several employers in the specific part of AI where a candidate wants to build a career.
