Venture dollars are more concentrated than venture-backed company counts. A handful of giant AI rounds can make California's share of capital look overwhelming, but the company base is broader. New York, Massachusetts, Texas, Florida, Washington, Colorado, Illinois, Pennsylvania and North Carolina all support substantial numbers of funded businesses.
That distinction matters for founders. A state with many active companies can offer experienced employees, lawyers, recruiters and potential customers even if it does not attract the same volume of mega-rounds as the Bay Area.
California still has the deepest network
Silicon Valley's advantage is cumulative. Decades of exits and company formation have produced founders who reinvest, employees who move between startups and investors who specialise by sector and stage.
That network effect is difficult to reproduce quickly, which is why California remains first even after years of geographic dispersion.
New York and Massachusetts have durable specialisms
New York has scale across fintech, enterprise software, consumer technology and media. Massachusetts combines software with biotechnology, healthcare and robotics around the Boston and Cambridge research base.
Texas is more geographically distributed, with Austin, Dallas and Houston contributing different company types.
Company count is a better ecosystem measure than one big round
A state can jump in annual funding because one company raises several billion dollars. It is much harder to build a broad population of funded companies across multiple stages.
For that reason, company count is a useful complement to capital invested when comparing startup ecosystems.
