Runway's founders started from the creative side of machine learning. Cristóbal Valenzuela, Anastasis Germanidis and Alejandro Matamala were interested in what neural networks could do to images and video before generative media had become a consumer phenomenon.
That timing mattered. Instead of retrofitting AI into a legacy editing suite, Runway built a product and research culture around generation from the beginning. Early creator tools provided distribution while the research team moved steadily toward increasingly capable video models.
The product became the research lab
Runway's commercial advantage came from putting experimental capabilities in the hands of filmmakers, designers and advertisers quickly. Real usage created feedback on where generative video failed: temporal consistency, motion, control, style and editability.
That feedback loop helped the company move from individual effects toward models that generate entire clips from text or images. Partnerships with entertainment companies showed that the product was beginning to enter professional workflows rather than remaining a novelty for social media.
Video is a more expensive frontier
Generating moving images demands far more compute than generating text, which makes model progress capital intensive. Runway's 2025 financing, led by General Atlantic with participation from Nvidia, SoftBank and others, reflected that reality.
The company is therefore balancing two businesses at once: software sold to creative customers and frontier research that consumes large amounts of infrastructure. The founders' challenge is to make the second continuously improve the economics of the first.
The ambition is moving beyond media
By 2026 Runway was increasingly describing its work in terms of world models and real-world intelligence, including applications in robotics and physical systems. That broadens the thesis substantially beyond Hollywood or advertising.
If the same models that learn motion and scene dynamics from video can help machines reason about physical environments, Runway's founding bet on generative media becomes a route into a much larger AI category.
